Alexander Dubcek University of Trenčín, founded on 1st July 1997 as a state higher education institution, ranks among the youngest universities in Slovakia. Before the University establishment there were several detached workplaces of other universities operating in Trenčín and Trenčín region. This region was the only one having no higher education institution in Slovakia. Beside the state-wide need of higher education enhancement and the higher education student ratio increase, it was the high concentration of engineering, electrical engineering and consumer industry, eminent research development and project organisations, social, public health and culture organisations that initiated the foundation of an autonomous University in Trenčín. The second reason was a fairly big potential of young people in Trenčín region capable of studying at a higher education institution.
In accordance with the law, four basic University constituents were established at the University foundation: Faculty of Special Technology, Faculty of Industrial Technologies, Faculty of Mechatronics, and Faculty of Social and Economic Science. In 2002 the Institute of Natural Sciences and Humanities was founded providing particular University-wide teaching and research functions. In 2004 The Institute of Public Health and Nursing was founded aimed at the teaching and research in the field of health care.
After five years of existence and on the basis of the achieved results in building a new University, the institution was honoured and its name was changed into Alexander Dubcek University of Trenčín and it was transformed into the public higher institution.
Alexander Dubček University of Trenčín is situated in the town of Trenčín which is the regional capital, in the centre of Považie region occupying an economical and industrial eminent position in Slovakia.
